Desk News :: The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Thursday alleged that a team of the Detective Branch of police took Tk 1 lakh for not arresting an ailing leader of the party during a raid in the leader’s residence in the capital’s Kalabagan area on Tuesday. The police, however, denied the allegation.
BNP chairperson’s media wing official Shamsuddin Didar alleged that a team of DB raided the residence of BNP national executive committee member and Shariatpur district unit former president Jamal Sharif Hero Tuesday evening and tried to arrest him.
Jamal’s wife Shamima Akter told the team that her husband had been suffering from kidney disease and needed dialysis regularly, said Shamsuddin.
Quoting the wife, Shamsuddin said that the DB team then demanded Tk 5 lakh for not arresting the BNP leader.
As Shamima told the cops that she could not manage the amount right now, the raiding team was adamant with their demand, he said and added that the BNP leader’s wife then managed Tk 1 lakh from her relatives and gave it to the raiding team.
The DB team then seized and took away all the CCTV cameras and footage from the building, he alleged.
He alleged that the team also asked Shamima to not to disclose the money issue to anyone and directed her to tell people that police did not arrest Jamaluddin as he had been suffering from kidney disease.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police deputy commissioner for DB Ramna division, Humayun Kabir, told New Age that he was not aware of any such DB raid at the BNP leader’s house and that none of his division conducted any such raid.
