Sylhet Central Jail Deputy Inspector General (DIG Prisons) Perth Gopal has been sacked in a case filed under the Bribery and Money Laundering Act. With this the formal trial of the case began.
Judge Mohammad Nazrul Islam of Dhaka’s Special Judge’s Court-10 on Wednesday (November 4th) dismissed Perth Gopal’s plea for acquittal and set November 16 as the date for his testimony.
Earlier, Perth Gopal was produced in court. At that time, his lawyer applied for exemption from the case on behalf of the accused. On the other hand, the ACC held a hearing in favor of the complaint. After hearing both the parties, the court dismissed the plea of the accused and ordered to frame charges.
On August 31, Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge KM Imrul Kayesh accepted the chargesheet filed by the ACC. At the same time, the case was transferred to Dhaka Special Judge’s Court-10 on October 29. Earlier on August 24, the investigation officer of the case, the assistant director of the ACC. Saladin submitted the chargesheet to the court with 14 witnesses.
On July 26, 2019, the ACC went to Perth Gopal Banik at the ACC head office on a charge of irregularities and corruption in the jail. In the afternoon, the ACC recovered Tk 60 lakh from Perth Gopal’s flat in Dhanmondi’s Bhoot Lane. He was arrested after that. The next day, on July 29, the ACC filed a case against him under Section 161 of the Penal Code, Section 5 (2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1947 and Section 4 (2) of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2012 at the ACC’s Dhaka Integrated District Office-1.
According to the chargesheet, the dismissed Deputy Inspector General of Prisons, Perth Gopal Banik, misused his powers while in government service and illegally earned Rs 60 lakh through various irregularities, corruption and bribery.
He hid the money in his residence for smuggling abroad without depositing it in any bank named after him. Section 161 of the Penal Code, Section 27 (1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004, Section 5 (2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1948 and Prevention of Money Laundering. Has committed a punishable offense under Section 4 (2) of the Act, 2012.

At the same time Dr. Wes Ahmed Chowdhury, his wife, the head of the gynecology department of Jalalabad Ragib-Rabeya Medical College Hospital. A source confirmed that Jamila Khatun is also not going to work. Judge Ziadur Rahman of the Sylhet Additional Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court (Acting) passed the order on Tuesday. The accused are, Sylhet Women’s Medical College Hospital, Associate Professor of Pediatric Surgery. Wes Ahmed Chowdhury, his wife, the head of the gynecology department of Jalalabad Ragib-Rabeya Medical College Hospital. Jamila Khatun, son Tahsan, daughter Taskia Begum and Hasna Begum of Angarjur Lamapara village in Gowainghat. 11 people have been made witnesses in the case. The matter was confirmed by the plaintiff’s lawyer Advocate Syed Mohsin Ahmed. He said the teenager’s father, Abdul Khaliq, had alleged in court that his daughter had been tortured to death. At that time, the judge of the court questioned him on various issues and also recorded the statement of Abdul Khalik. As well as various documents submitted by the plaintiff in the charge sheet The court directed the OC of Kotwali police station to register the case as a statement within three days after finding the truth of the incident in the review and deposition. The court judge passed the order under Section 156 (3) of the Criminal Procedure Code. The plaintiff in the case complained that due to lack of family, he had to work part-time at home as well as study. Wes and Dr. Rina was sent to Jamila Khatun’s house. From then on, he was tortured in various ways. The rest of the family, including the housewife, abused Rina mentally and physically whenever she did something wrong. Most of the time, his daughter Rina told him that he was being tortured, but his father would tell him to stay at home as he was poor. On October 31, at around 10:30 am, accused Hasna Begum called Rina’s brother Al Amin on her mobile phone and said that her sister had committed suicide. Upon receiving the news, the relatives went to the house No. 43, Road No. 4, Akhalia Surma Residential Area and saw Rina’s body lying on the floor of the stairs. The plaintiff alleged that the girl was tortured to death. According to the complaint, Tahsan and Jamila Khatun used to beat Rina if she did something wrong at home. Others also tortured him on their behalf. Tahsan, the accused in the case, had a bad eye on Rina. Shirina Begum, witness number 11 in the case, told the plaintiff that Tahsan, the son of the medical couple, touched the sensitive part of her body while Rina was alive. It is also mentioned in the statement that the plaintiff’s daughter died due to the torture of the accused for protesting their immoral behavior. My sister was killed,” said Al-Amin, Rina’s brother. He was often beaten. My sister died because of the beating. Then the suicide drama is arranged. Rina has bruises on her neck. Dr. Jamila’s younger son is too much for my sister Used to torture. My sister is a very simple and very good girl. He will never commit suicide. We have filed a case in the court. I want justice for those who killed my sister deliberately.
