Hason Raja’s 166th birth anniv today

Today is the 166th birth anniversary of Bengali poet, mystic philosopher and songwriter Hason Raja. He was born on 1854 in Sylhet. Raja gained international recognition few years after his death, when Nobel laureate, Rabindranath Tagore, mentioned him in his lectures at Oxford University.

Hason Raja has composed nearly two hundred songs in his lifetime. Through his songs, he expressed the everlasting message of humanity, secularism, soil and people. So he is still alive in the minds of people across the country including Sunamganj.

Hason Raja lived a very simple life though he was born in a wealthy Zamindar family of Lakshnashri in Sunamganj. Many came from far away to the Hason Raja Museum to learn about his fame.

Raja died on 7 December 1922. Two museums were established in his name in two places. One, Hason Raja Museum sponsored by “Hason Raja Museum Trust” at his birthplace, Lokkonshri, Sunamganj, and another, Museum of Rajas’ at RajaKunjo, Sylhet, sponsored by “Educationist Dewan Talibur Raja Trust”.
