The ‘Greater Sylhet Stone Concerned Traders-Workers Unity Council’ has called for a 72-hour transport strike this time as no solution has been found after a 48-hour strike to demand the opening of all stone quarries in Sylhet. The announcement was made by the council on Thursday (December 16). Golam Hadi Chaiful, president of Sylhet Divisional Truck Owners Group, confirmed the matter to Sylhetview. The strike will be observed in the entire Sylhet division on December 22, 23 and 24.
Earlier, the 48-hour strike called for the same demand ended on December 10 at 8 am. On the same day, the leaders of the ‘Greater Sylhet Stone Concerned Traders-Workers Unity Council’ called for a tough program on December 16 (today). It is learned that four stone quarries in Sylhet have been closed for almost a year. The local administration took this decision to prevent the destruction of the environment. However, stone traders and concerned people say that the high court has directed to open the quarry. But the administration is not abiding by it.
As the quarry is closed, about one million stone and transport workers are in dire straits. In view of this, the ‘Greater Sylhet Stone Concerned Traders-Workers Unity Council’ called for a 48-hour goods transport strike on Wednesday (December 6) from 8am. However, as there was no solution to the issue, the leaders of the ‘Greater Sylhet Stone Concerned Traders-Workers Unity Council’ called for a 72-hour (all types of) transport strike.Golam Hadi Chaiful, president of the Sylhet District Truck Owners Group, said, “We have already gone on a 48-hour strike to transport goods only for humanitarian reasons.” But the administration did not listen to our demands. We have now called for all types of transport strikes across the department. Even then, if there is no solution, tougher programs will be announced. ‘
