Besides, three other people were washed away by floodwater in Chattogram and Cox\u2019s Bazar.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The flood also left thousands of people without electricity and snapped communications on many roads, including Chattogram-Cox\u2019s Bazar highway.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Under the situation, members of Bangladesh Army have been deployed in Chattogram and Bandarban districts to deal with the aggravating flood situation and landslides.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Besides, all the educational institutions in Chattogram, Cox\u2019s Bazar, Khagrachhari and Bandarban districts will remain closed for two more days &#8212; today and tomorrow. Earlier, the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE) announced all the educational institutions in the port city closed for Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In Chattogram, the flashflood caused by heavy rains over the last one week left around 6.35 lakh people homeless in 15 upazilas of the district.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Rain which started on August 2 continued throughout the past few days. It intensified further on August 3 and continued heavily till Tuesday afternoon with some breaks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Met office in the city\u2019s Patenga area recorded highest 45mm rainfall in the last 24 hours till 3:00pm on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Light to moderate rain may continue at most of the places while moderately heavy to heavy at some places of Chattogram and neigbouring areas, said Suman Saha of the met office.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A university student and a farmer were washed away by the floodwater in Lohagara upazila on Monday. Although the body of the student was found on Tuesday, the other remained missing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Junayed Islam Zarif, 22, son of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto of Amirabad village in the upazila, was a student of Computer Science and Engineering department at private BGC Trust University.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Locals said Zarif fell into a hole on a road under water and went missing while taking his neighbours to a shelter centre in Jana Kalyan area on Monday night.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Later, his body was recovered from a nearby area on Tuesday afternoon, said officer-in-charge Md Rashedul Islam of Lohagara Police Station.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The flood submerged new areas in the 15 upazilas of the district on Tuesday, snapping the power supply and road communications to and from Chattogram, Cox\u2019s Bazar and Bandarban districts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Chattogram District Relief and Rehabilitation Office estimated primary loss caused by the flood at Tk 135 crore.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On the other hand, due to the damage to electric poles and distribution lines, power supply to eight upazilas of the district was disrupted severely.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The flood caused houses, croplands, roads and educational institutions to remain submerged under water in the affected upazilas. Of them, Satkania, Lohagara and Chandanaish were the worst affected.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Md Saifullah Majumder said at least 6.35 lakh people of the 15 upazilas got marooned till Tuesday and around 7,000 people have so far been taken to shelter centres from the affected areas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A total of 1,193 shelter centres were kept ready and the affected people were provided with relief items through the officials concerned, he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Saifullah said the water level of Sangu, Matamuhuri, Halda and Karnaphuli rivers is on the rise.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cFifteen upazilas of the district, as well as the city areas, have been flooded more or less,\u201d said Chattogram Deputy Commissioner (DC) Abul Bashar Mohammed Fakhruzzaman.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe most affected upazilas areas are Satkania, Lohagara and Chandanaish. Almost all the unions under Satkania upazila were submerged,\u201d he said, adding that they were sending relief materials to the affected areas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Army members were deployed to help the people of flood-affected and landslide-prone areas in Chattogram and Bandarban on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Inter Services Public Relation (ISPR) Directorate in a press release said Army men are continuously conducting rescue operations, emergency relief distribution and medical aids in those areas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe other formations are also observing the situation in their respective areas and are ready to assist the civil administration,\u201d the press release said, adding that the Army will continue their activities until the situation returns to normal.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ctg-Cox\u2019s Bazar and Ctg-Bandarban highways inundated<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Sources said the Chattogram-Cox\u2019s Bazar highway went under water from Chandanaish College gate to Satkania Keranihat, halting vehicular movement on the highway.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Hundreds of vehicles got stranded on both ends, causing untold sufferings for passengers, particularly children and elderly ones.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On the other hand, different points of Chattogram-Bandarban highway were also submerged due to the rainfall.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">People had to pass on their foot as vehicle movement remained halted in the areas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Several lakh people of eight upazilas in south Chattogram were facing power disruption as electric poles and distribution lines were damaged badly.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Senior General Manager Engineer Dilip Chandra Chowdhury of Chattogram Palli Bidyut Samity-1 said people of three upazilas were experiencing total power outage while five upazilas partially.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">They were trying to restore the power supply, but it will take time until the flood situation becomes normal, he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In Bandarban, three people, including a woman and her daughter, were killed and six others injured in landslides on Monday and Tuesday, reports UNB.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Shah Mozahid Uddin, deputy commissioner of Bandarban, said Nurul Islam, 35, was killed and six others were injured when a chunk of mud collapsed on his house at Kumari in Lama upazila on Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Meanwhile, Nurunnahar, 35, and her daughter Sabekunnahar, 12, were killed in a landslide in Godapara in Sadar upazila of the district on Monday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Besides, road communications of Bandarban district with other parts of the country remained suspended for the last couple of days as all the roads were submerged due to the intermittent rainfall.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to the district administration, residents of Balaghata, Fajr Ali Para, Chairman Para, Police Lines area, Chaigya Mahajan Para, Horticulture, Lalmiya Char, Hafezghona, Armypara, Kashem Para, Stadium and Keching Para areas were the worst sufferers due to the flood.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The heavy flooding also caused power supply disruptions in the low-lying areas of the town since Sunday midnight.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Besides, Bandarban-Rangamati, Chattogram-Cox&#8217;s Bazar road communications were snapped as roads went under floodwater at different points. As a result, access to essential services and supplies has become severely limited for the affected areas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The power supply in the district remained suspended since Monday following the closure of a power sub-station amid flood.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The DC said 265 shelter centres have been opened as the two-thirds of the district town were inundated, rendering many people marooned.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Already 85 tonnes of food and Tk one lakh have been allocated while 43 medical teams are working in the flood-hit areas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In Cox\u2019s Bazar, flashflood triggered by torrential rains and onrush of water from the upstream hit 90 villages under seven upazilas of the district.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The low-lying areas of Chakaria, Pekua, Ramu, Sadar and Eidgaon upazilas of the district were inundated as the flood situation worsened in the past 24 hours, rendering 2.5 lakh people marooned.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The local administration suspended vehicular movement on Cox\u2019s Bazar-Chattogram, Ramu-Naikhangchhari and Cox\u2019s Bazar-Teknaf roads.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A man drowned in floodwater while trying to collect wood log while three children and a woman died in landslide in the district on Monday and Tuesday, said Deputy Commissioner Shaheen Imran.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The houses and educational establishments in Chakaria and Pekua upazilas were inundated by the floodwater while the fish enclosures of different areas of the district were washed away.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Power connection was disrupted in 15 villages under the seven upazilas of the district.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Matamuhuri and Bakkhali rivers were flowing above its danger marks while flood control embankments at 10 points along Matamuhuri River collapsed, inundating the low-lying areas.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Online Desk The flood situation has deteriorated in the country\u2019s southeastern region with water inundating new areas in Chattogram, Bandarban and Cox\u2019s Bazar districts on Tuesday, leaving over 1 million people marooned.
