Desk News :: Prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Friday said that she should not be given lessons about holding free, fair and credible elections.<\/p>\n
\u2018It doesn\u2019t need to educate me in free, fair and neutral elections. Because, we\u2019ve established the voting rights of the people of Bangladesh through struggles and movements under the leadership of Awami League,\u2019 she told a press conference at her official residence Ganabhaban.<\/p>\n
She held the press conference to brief the media about her visit to the United States and the United Kingdom. She attended the United Nations General Assembly session and other events during the visit.<\/p>\n
In response to a question about the reserve, the prime minister said, \u2018If they criticise me too much, I will shut everything down and sit idle. After the election, if I retain the power, I will do it again.\u2019<\/p>\n
She further said, \u2018After everything is sorted out, now we have to listen about election, vote and economy. But, I don\u2019t want to listen about all these.\u2019<\/p>\n
She said, \u2018Now, should we leave the people in the dark…if they say we need to increase the reserve, and then we will shut down the power plant, stop water supply. The reserve will be good if everything is closed.\u2019<\/p>\n
Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha adds: Sheikh Hasina said that no one raised the issue of caretaker government during her recent visits.<\/p>\n
\u2018No one talked about caretaker government. There was no talk on the CG system with anyone. No one asked me about it…,\u2019 she said, replying to a query regarding her meeting with US national security adviser Jake Sullivan and others.<\/p>\n
Referring to the bitter experiences during the 2007-08 CG, she said, \u2018Can anyone want it?\u2019<\/p>\n
Sheikh Hasina, also the president of ruling Awami League, said, \u2018This system (CG) has been destroyed by BNP.\u2019<\/p>\n
\u2018So, no such talks about the CG took place (with anybody),\u2019 she added.<\/p>\n
The Bangladesh prime minister had a meeting with Jake Sullivan last week in Washington. Last month, she had a fruitful pull-aside meeting with president Joe Biden and took selfie on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in New Delhi.<\/p>\n
Mentioning that people have voted for her party as free and fair elections were held, she said, \u2018This economic development (of Bangladesh) has happened as we\u2019ve been in power in a row (for three consecutive terms).\u2019<\/p>\n
Sheikh Hasina raised the question why so many questions were coming now regarding the election.<\/p>\n
\u2018Has it become a matter of headache for all that a country has progressed so rapidly?\u2019<\/p>\n
The prime minister mentioned that she told the international community that once there was a tradition in Bangladesh that the government of the army, by the army and for the (army) generals. \u2018It is we who established the government of the people, by the people and for the people,\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n
Smelling a rat in the voices regarding free, fair and credible elections, she said, \u2018I doubt why are all talking much about free, fair and impartial elections when the country is marching towards progress. I doubt it. Actually, it is an attempt to thwart the election,\u2019 she added.<\/p>\n
The Awami League chief said that those who knew that they won\u2019t get votes in the election were now seeking favour everywhere (foreigners).<\/p>\n
She said that \u2018I\u2019ve told them (foreigners) clearly. We\u2019ve fought for votes. With blood, at the risk of my own life, I have attained the right to vote for the people of this country.\u2019<\/p>\n
\u2018Today, I don\u2019t need to be taught about the right to vote,\u2019 she added.<\/p>\n
Sheikh Hasina said, \u2018We agitated during Ayub Khan\u2019s regime, we are on the streets. It\u2019s not new. I have been struggling on the streets since my school days. I did it against Ayub Khan, I did it against Yahya Khan, Zia, Ershad, Khaleda Zia, who were vote thieves.\u2019<\/p>\n
\u2018Awami League does not need to rig votes. People vote for Awami League spontaneously. We\u2019ve gained trust through work,\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n
Regarding the movement of BNP, the prime minister said, \u2018We\u2019re not stopping their movement. They are agitating and gathering people.\u2019<\/p>\n
\u2018It\u2019s good. They (BNP) had made so much money by stealing, and all the money they had laundered is now being used,\u2019 she said, adding, \u2018At least some money is going to common people. As much as they stage movement, some money will go to the common people, I consider it in this way.\u2019<\/p>\n
The head of government, however, warned that \u2018If they (BNP) try to do any harm to the people, they will not be given any concession.\u2019<\/p>\n
She said, \u2018People are with us, we don\u2019t have to do anything . . . the people will resist them.\u2019<\/p>\n
In this connection, she referred to the arson terrorism of the BNP-Jamaat alliance in 2013 when the common people stood against them. \u2018This time, it will be the same.\u2019<\/p>\n
Requesting journalists to find out their (BNP) source of money, she said that it was necessary to know from where they got money and how they spent so much money.<\/p>\n
She said that the advantage of Awami League was that leaders and workers of the party did politics with their own money.<\/p>\n
On Wednesday, the prime minister returned home from London after wrapping up her 16-day official visit to the US and the UK.<\/p>\n
Awami League general secretary and road transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader, AL presidium members, deputy leader of the House Matia Chowdhury, Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim and Kazi Zafarullah and state minister for foreign affairs Shahriar Alam were present on the dais.<\/p>\n
Prime minister\u2019s press secretary Ihsanul Karim moderated the function.<\/p>\n
Replying to another query, prime minister Sheikh Hasina said that it was definitely essential that there should be an opposition party in the country, but those who had no single seat in parliament could not be counted as the opposition.<\/p>\n
How those to be treated as the opposition who have no courage to contest elections or can\u2019t come in parliament through polls? she posed a question.<\/p>\n
Mentioning that Bangladesh follows the Westminster-type of democracy, Sheikh Hasina said that those who had seats in the opposition bench of parliament were considered as the opposition in democratic system.<\/p>\n
She added, \u2018If anyone continues to bark on the streets, it is not counted as the opposition in the foreign countries.\u2019<\/p>\n
In reply to another query, the prime minister said that her party would pick the candidates for the next parliamentary elections taking consideration who are more acceptable to the people and who gained trust and confidence of the people by their works.<\/p>\n
\u2018We will consider those who have credibility among the people. I conduct a survey after every six months,\u2019 she said, adding that if anyone loses his or her position, the person is asked to work more and win the hearts of the people through work.<\/p>\n
As her attention was drawn regarding BNP\u2019s remark that the prime minister returned home with empty hands from her recent foreign visit, she said that BNP leaders were resorting to falsehood through loudspeakers. \u2018It\u2019s their habit to tell lies. They try to undermine everything,\u2019 she added.<\/p>\n
The prime minister asked the countrymen not to pay heed to the falsehood spread by BNP leaders.<\/p>\n
She said that they (BNP leaders) continue to announce a specific date to oust the government. \u2018Let them do it. We don\u2019t have any problem. I don\u2019t mind it… if the movement continues, it is good for her party,\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n
